An improved pledge

Here's a suggestion:

I pledge allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America and to the democracy for which it stands, a nation with freedom and justice for all.

Happy Independence Day!

Not to quibble, but the United States isn't a democracy, never has been. It's a republic, with a representative form of government. Pure democracy lost its luster in ancient Athens, when the vote of the citizenry became mob rule that forced Socrates to drink the hemlock.

sounds pretty quibbly to me, but you're right. I was thinking "democracy" in the metaphoric sense, as in "wouldn't it be nice if we stood up for democracy here the way we talk about doing it everywhere else?"
